The William & Mary dance program will mark its 85th anniversary with a weekend of events, including the unveiling of a plaque honoring the late Carol Wallace Sherman and Shirley Roby, professors emeritae, who led the dance program for 36 years before their retirement.

That event will take place as part of a program starting at 2 p.m. Saturday in Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall, 601 Jamestown Rd. It will begin with an alumni panel in the dance performance studio, followed by the dedication in the PBK lobby.

The plaque reads:

In honor of the vision, generosity and decades of teaching of Carol Wallace Sherman and Shirley Roby. Beloved educators whose shared passion for dance inspired generations of students and established an enduring foundation for excellence, creativity and belonging at William & Mary.

The weekend includes four performances of DANCEVENT, a concert of elegant dance works by William & Mary faculty Joan Gavaler, Leah Glenn and Denise Damon Wade, with performances by Orchesis Dance Company. Technical direction is by Lilliana Gonzalez, lighting design by Joshua Rose and costumes by Harri Horsley.

Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Glenn Close Theatre at PBK Memorial Hall. A talkback with the audience will follow the performance.

The dancers will perform again at 7:30 p.m. Friday Oct. 30 and Saturday Oct. 31. The final performance will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 1.
