Dear W&M colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Suzanne Raitt, Vice Dean for Arts, Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies, and Chancellor Professor of English, has graciously agreed to serve as acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences beginning January 1, 2023, until June 30, 2023. The transition process in the A&S Dean’s Office is expected to start immediately.

In addition to her prodigious scholarship and teaching record, Suzanne reflects admirable levels of service to the William & Mary community. She has been English department Chair, directed the university’s Women’s Studies program, represented the faculty on the Board of Visitors and held three Faculty Assembly leadership positions, including President. In 2008, she was honored with the Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence at William & Mary.

I am grateful for Suzanne’s willingness to step into the role and have every confidence she will apply a steady hand to the helm of Arts & Sciences. I look forward to partnering with her.

Again, I invite you to share your opinions on the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences by visiting the online survey and watching for additional opportunities by which to offer feedback.

Sincerely,

Peggy

Dear W&M colleagues,

In August, I messaged you that William & Mary’s Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences Maria Donoghue Velleca intended to step down from the role at the end of this academic year. This week, she informed me that she will depart the university at the end of the calendar year.

Next week, I will be in touch to share interim plans to ensure a smooth transition. The strength of Arts & Sciences lies in our outstanding students, faculty and staff, and I look forward to continued collaboration with the A&S administration to advance Arts & Sciences and support our ongoing progress and achievements through this year and beyond.

I hope that you were able to attend one of this week’s town hall sessions to discuss the A&S dean search. If not, there will be additional opportunities. You may also visit the online survey to share your thoughts on important indicators for success in the role, your vision for the future of Arts & Sciences, and more.

I again thank Maria for her important contributions to William & Mary, and I invite you to review some of the efforts she has advanced during her time in Williamsburg.

Sincerely,

Peggy
