Provost Peggy Agouris sent the following message to the campus community on June 28, 2022 – Ed.
Dear William & Mary Community,
I am very pleased to announce that Teresa Longo has accepted the position of associate provost for international affairs. Teresa begins her new role on July 1 and will perform these duties in addition to her current responsibilities as executive director of the Reves Center for International Studies, effectively consolidating international affairs.
As Steve Hanson transitions from the vice provost for academic and international affairs role to teaching and scholarship at the end of this month, Teresa will assume some of that position’s responsibilities. Teresa is already familiar with many of the duties associated with this position, having served as acting vice provost for international affairs and director of the Reves Center during Steve’s 2017-2018 sabbatical. William & Mary is in the process of hiring a vice provost for academic affairs, the other portion of Steve’s position.
Steve set a very high bar for success, as he worked to establish W&M’s global presence to benefit particularly our undergraduate education. His success paved the way for this reorganization, which will allow Teresa to press the role and the university’s internationalization capabilities even further, especially in support of Vision 2026. W&M News published a wonderful feature on Steve’s contributions over more than a decade.
As associate provost and executive director, Teresa will work closely with each of W&M’s five schools to catalyze international engagement, foster a diverse and internationally inclusive environment, and promote the internationalization of learning, teaching and research at William & Mary. Teresa will also convene the Reeves International Advisory Board, chair the university’s International Advisory Committee, and oversee the Reves Center’s three areas of specialization: global education, global engagement and international students and scholars.
Teresa will also support the provost’s office in nurturing William & Mary’s external international academic partnerships, which includes current initiatives like the St Andrews William & Mary Joint Degree Programme, but may also encompass outreach to U.S. government agencies.
As many of you already know, Teresa has served as a leader in international education and research at the university since joining the faculty in 1989. Teresa earned the esteem of her colleagues for the quality of her scholarship and teaching, in addition to her leadership roles as dean for interdisciplinary studies and as director of the Roy R. Charles Center for Academic Excellence. In recognition of her devotion, commitment and outstanding service to William & Mary, Teresa was awarded W&M’s Thomas Jefferson Award, a Jefferson Teaching Award, an Alumni Society Teaching Award, and a Plumeri Award; and she was recognized by the Case-Carnegie Foundation as a Virgina Professor of the Year. I encourage you to read the W&M News story for additional information on Teresa’s background and accomplishments.
I welcome Teresa into the role of associate provost. I cannot wait to see what she accomplishes moving forward. Please join me in congratulating Teresa on her new role on campus.
Sincerely,
Peggy Agouris
