Vice President for Student Affairs Ginger Ambler sent the following message to the campus community on Aug. 12, 2022. – Ed.

Dear William & Mary Community,

It is with profound sadness that I write to inform you of the tragic death of one of our students. We recently learned that Zhykierra Guy ’23 died on August 5, 2022, near her home in Henrico County. She was the victim of gun violence, and the Henrico Police are investigating her death as a homicide.

A rising senior planning to graduate in May 2023, Zhykierra was a Government major and a Business minor. Her future aspirations included graduate study in either law or business. As an undergraduate, Zhykierra started her own online retail hair business called “Lavish Hair Zesty Girls” also known as LHZG Enterprises in 2021. She also loved dance and pursued that passion while at William & Mary. Her mom shared, “She was dedicated to giving all her love to family and friends. Her energy and soul touched many students there, and we are grateful as parents for the time she was given to us on earth.”

Zhykierra is survived by her parents, Lakisha Hamlett and Shanta Guy, a brother, Atnahs Guy, and many other relatives and friends. Any W&M students needing support in the wake of this community loss are encouraged to reach out to the Dean of Students Office (757-221-2510) or the Counseling Center (757-221-3620).

Funeral services will be held on Monday at Zhykierra’s church. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome.
