President Katherine A. Rowe and Executive Vice President Mike Todd send the following message to faculty and staff on June 30, 2026. – Ed.
Dear Colleagues,
We write to share good news out of Richmond. Yesterday, the General Assembly approved and Governor Spanberger signed the Commonwealth’s 2026-2028 biennium budget. The budget reflects continued support for William & Mary’s people, our campuses, and research. Headlines for the university include:
A compensation increase for eligible employees.
W&M will initiate a 3% increase for all eligible, non-classified employees. The remaining .5% will be used for strategic salary needs across the university. Cabinet will receive additional guidance.
Eligible, classified employees will receive a 3.5% increase.
Increases for 12-month employees will take effect on July 25, reflected on the August 14 paycheck. Increases for nine-month faculty will be included with the next contract cycle, reflected in the September 1 paycheck. CHRO Anne Roemer will share additional information regarding eligibility after the state releases updated requirements.
Funding for capital projects at W&M and our Batten School & VIMS, including construction of the Marine Operations Administration Complex as well as planning authorization for geothermal wells, Sunken Garden District renovations, and the fisheries science research building.
New investments in key priorities, including funding for James Monroe’s Highland, the Community Law Clinic, the Office of Student Veteran Engagement, Troops to Teachers, the juvenile blue crab stock survey, and Atlantic menhaden research.
We are pleased that the state budget aligns well with the university’s budget, which the Board of Visitors approved in April. For those interested in a deeper dive, the strategic planning toolkit offers a tutorial on the university’s budget.
Warm thanks to our colleagues in Government & External Affairs and the Budget Office for their diligent work throughout this process.
Sincerely,
Katherine A. Rowe
