Yesterday, the City of Williamsburg announced that it was investigating a wastewater overflow near Monticello Avenue and the entrance to the William & Mary School of Education. It was contained by mid-morning. Today, the city announced that a part failure caused the overflow and that most of the wastewater ended up in the wide floodplain of College Creek. As such, the Virginia Department of Health has recommended that people avoid contact with the water in Lake Matoaka for a week. If contact cannot be avoided, people should wash exposed skin with warm, soapy water.
