The following messages were sent to the campus community regarding expected storms in the Williamsburg, VA area on March 16, 2026. It was updated to clarify that all classes – meaning both in-person and virtual – are cancelled Monday, March 16, 2026 – Ed.

Tornado Watch

The Williamsburg area is currently under a tornado watch. 

A tornado watch indicates that weather conditions are favorable for the formation of tornados in the watch area. You should stay informed about weather conditions and plan what you will do and where to go if a tornado warning is issued.

March 15, 2026 – 5:53 p.m.

Dear William & Mary Community – 

The National Weather Service is predicting severe weather for the Williamsburg area and across Hampton Roads tonight through tomorrow evening. Periods of rain and damaging winds are expected, along with the potential for tornadoes. 

Given the severe weather forecasted, the university will be closed Monday, March 16, 2026 and the Provost has cancelled all classes – in-person and virtual. Per university policy, teleworking is not required during the closure. Essential employees should consult with their supervisors and may be required to report to campus.

Reminders

  • All university events are canceled during a closure.
  • Report any hazards encountered to Work Control (limbs, power lines) at 757-221-2270.
  • Students may access dining hall schedules at WM Dining
  • Mobility services will not be in operation during the closure period.
  • Anyone with mobility needs during this time should contact William & Mary Police at 757.221.4596.
  • Non-essential employees should not be in their offices, or on campus, during the closure. To ensure safety, access to buildings will be restricted.

Terms to Know

  • Tornado Watch – means conditions are favorable for a tornado. 
  • Tornado Warning – means a tornado has already been spotted or that radar is indicating storm circulation that can quickly spawn a tornado.
  • If the university’s emergency siren sounds during a warning, take shelter immediately in the lowest level and/or an interior room of the closest building.

  • Please stay aware of your surroundings. 
  • In the event of a Tornado Warning, there are additional safety steps you should take.
